Super Falcons poster girl and record breaker, Asisat Oshoala has dedicated her record fifth women’s player of the year award to her national teammates hailing them as the best in the world.
The Gala and award night held in Rabat, Morroco saw the Barcelona Femeni forward beat Njoya Nchout, and Grace Canda to a record fifth victory, going above compatriot, Perpetua Nwokcha who had four. Oshola now stands alone on record fifth.
Presented with the award by CAF president, Patrice Motsepe, Oshoala said, “I had to fight hard to get to this point. I would like to thank all my teammates and my friends at my club FC Barcelona. Muchas gracias.”
“I also have to thank my friends on the national team. You are the best teammates in the world.”
“In football, there are many lessons and I would like to send a message ‘we can fall back, but we can get back up’,” said Oshoala in hailing the courage shown by the Super Falcons after being reduced to nine men to still take their semifinal against Morocco all the way to the penalty shootout.
With a third-place game in sight, Oshoala will watch on having suffered an injury that ruled her out of the competition in the opening loss against South Africa.
Oshoala will be hopeful enough to be ready when the Women’s world cup begins in Australia, New Zealand with a qualification spot already sealed for Super Falcons.
