Former Super Eagles captain, Joseph Ikpo Yobo has added his voice to reactions over the historic comeback achieved by Manchester United in the UEFA Champions League, with a verdict that it was simply majestic.
Speaking in the wake of United putting aside odds of a 2-0 loss at home in the first leg, to whip Paris-Saint Germaine 3-1 away in Wednesday’s reverse fixture, Yobo said it was another heroic achievement for The Red Devils’ interim manager, Ole Gonnar Solksjaer.
Sports247.ng reports that The Red Devils were left with a mountain to climb after losing the first leg last month – a position from which no side had ever recovered in Champions League or European Cup history.
That, though, changed, when Marcus Rashford scored a controversial 94th minute penalty, after a lengthy VAR review, to seal one of United’s greatest ever European nights, with a historic win at Parc des Princes.
Romelu Lukaku had earlier opened the scoring after only two minutes and then restored that lead before half time following Juan Bernat’s equaliser, with both goals being gifted to him by PSG errors.
However, the icing belongs to Rashford, as he kept his nerve with his first ever penalty for the club to spark wild scenes of celebration on an unforgettable evening in Paris.
Moreover, United arrived in the French capital without 10 first-team players – nine of whom were injured in addition to the suspended Paul Pogba – but it took Solskjaer’s depleted squad less than two minutes to break the deadlock, much to Yobo’s amazement.
Yobo, who starred for Olympique Marseille of France as well as Everton and Norwich City of England at various points of his active career, added that he never thought it possible for United to win away in Paris.
Yobo retorted: “Who would have thought that Solskjaer would come (to Paris) with this team and give them such a belief.
”I think it comes from the manager which he showed today. If you watch the press conference, he said belief is the key for them.
”The early goal also helped, the early goal changed the narrative and when you go 2-1 ahead you start believing that you can do better.
”In the second half I thought they were in total control, they controlled the game and they could have even scored more.
”Overall, this is an incredible result, it is remarkable for United to qualify for the quarter-finals. It is going to go down in history.
”For Solskjaer, what he has done is unbelievable. To qualify for the quarterfinals is incredible for him.”
