Mutiu Adepoju, Nigeria’s Veteran retired football player, has showered praises on Late teammate, Rashidi Yekini has the pair both had quiet a close relationship before his demise.
“It’s true that am very close to Rasheed Yekini, may his soul rest in perfect peace, He was the best thing to happen to Nigerian football. During his days, he was a goal scorer, aside scoring goals, he was a very funny person. He brings happiness and jokes to the team and we laugh out a lot at his jokes”, Adepoju recalled.
“I never asked him what he was saying when he scored the first goal in 1994, I didn’t know what he was saying. I believe it was just the joy of him scoring in the World Cup. He was a very nice, jovial, and straightforward individual”.
“France 1998, a night before the game against Denmark, I can’t vividly remember because we are already in camp, we didn’t do well on our way to the World Cup preparation matches and lost almost all the friendlies although we won the first game against Spain and won the second match against Bulgaria which qualified us”.
Savoring the final group game loss, he said, “the last game of the group, we lost woefully, 3-0. It was such a bad one. It would have been different if the scoreline was 1-0 especially in a World Cup game. People were overconfident and considered Denmark’s as underdogs as they capitalized on our loopholes and scored successively. If we had been a little more careful and analyse their play, probably it would have been a different story now”.
