With June 15 fast approaching, excitement is building in the nation’s capital, FCT Abuja for the Yahaya Attom Foundation’s Charity Champions Cup.
All is set for the highly anticipated event, which will see African Footballer of the Year Victor Osimhen headline a star-studded lineup of football legends.
The Charity Champions Cup, an initiative of the Attom Foundation, will be held at the iconic MKO Abiola Stadium in Abuja. This exhibition match will bring together football legends from around the world and notable Nigerian celebrities in a thrilling contest aimed at raising funds and awareness for a noble cause.
Joining Osimhen are former African Footballer of the Year winners Didier Drogba and Kanu Nwankwo, along with an impressive roster of other football greats including Austin Okocha, Vincent Enyeama, El-Hadji Diouf, Emmanuel Adebayor, Emmanuel Eboue, and the ever-controversial Mario Balotelli. Current Super Eagles stars such as Wilfred Ndidi, Kelechi Iheanacho, and Kenneth Omeruo will also be participating, alongside Super Falcons duo Asisat Oshoala and Michelle Alozie.
The event aims to support at least 10,000 Nigerians, particularly the elderly, in addressing vision problems caused by refractive errors, cataracts, diabetic retinopathy, and glaucoma.
Attom Foundation founder Attom Yahaya underscored the significance of the cause beyond the match’s spectacle. “This is a thrilling project for us,” Yahaya said. “We’re grateful for the support we’ve received so far. There’s still work to be done, but we’re confident we’ll achieve our goal.”
Stanley Chibuna, known as Funny Bone, elaborated on the choice of football as the centerpiece for this initiative. “Football unifies Nigerians like nothing else,” Chibuna stated. “Just look at the recent AFCON and how everyone came together as one Nigeria. That’s why we’re using football to drive this initiative.”
Kafayat Shafau, known as Kaffy, expressed her excitement about the opportunity to make a positive impact. Emmanuel Ogonna Iwueke (Doctor Craze) and Ekemini Ekerette echoed the call for corporate support to achieve the Charity Champions Cup’s noble goals.
