Nigeria Association of Women in Sports (NAWIS) have advocated a situation in which sports academies for people with disabilities are established across the country.
The call was made at NAWIS’ 10th national conference, which took place at CBN Centre of Excellence, Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria.
While speaking on the theme ‘Promoting the well being of persons living with disability through sports,’ NAWIS president, Professor Florence Adeyanju said all three tiers of government in Nigeria should support the idea of special sports academies across the nation.
A communique signed by the reelected president and her board stated that more awareness should be created about para sports in Nigeria for people living with disabilities to partake.
In the communique, the association also frowned at street begging and urged academic institutions to consider persons with disabilities for admission when qualified.
The all-women body further stated: “Para athletes should be well taken care of with good welfare packages including scholarship and others that can empower them to be independent.
“All building facilities and equipment should consider the need of those living with disabilities.
“Programmes of institutions of learning should include courses with enabling environment for people living with disabilities.
“There should be no discrimination in the employment of sports men and women living with disabilities.”
