Nigerian midfielder Wisdom Kanu says he is pleased to have signed his first professional contract after inking a two-year deal with Slovakian Super Liga club MFK Zemplin Michalovce.
Kanu, who joined Zemplin Michalovce in mid-June describes the move as a dream come through after spending years playing for semi-professional clubs in the Slovak second and third divisions.
“I feel so excited after so many years trying to push myself to the professional level and now the dream coming through,” he told Sports247. “I feel so blessed that all the hard work, determination, dedication, and patience really get me where I am today, signing my first ever professional contract.”
The attacking midfielder revealed his objectives for the 2021 season.
“My target this year is to work together with my teammates to help the club achieve their goal this season. I want to play as many games in the Fortuna Liga as I can. There are 38 games in the season and hopefully, I can play in every one. I have to take it step-by-step.
“I haven’t set any targets in terms of goals and assists. At this moment I just want to stay in the team and get to understand and blend with them and play well.
“My target is to help my team stay up, we don’t want to go back down. I want to do everything I can to stay in the Fortuna Liga. It would be a good achievement.”
Kanu, 27, signed with Zemplin following a remarkable 2020-21 season with FK Slavoj Trebišov in the Slovak second tier where he scored 18 goals and laid on four assists from a midfield role.
He started his football career in Nigeria with Lagos Islanders before moving to Slovakia in 2016 where he has played for a number of second-tier clubs including FK Spisska Nova Ves, Inter Bratislava, FK Poprad, and FK Slavoj Trebišov.
