“One thing you must know is when the name of the country is called, it becomes paramount that the national team will also be solid. We have proven this before. I have also had an opportunity to be in this situation before,” Agu explained.
Alloy Agu pointed out the remarkable strength of the NPFL during the 1990s, where a majority of the national team roster comprised players who honed their skills within the domestic league. He cited the example of the 1990 African Cup of Nations, where the backbone of the Super Eagles’ squad comprised predominantly of homegrown talents.
“When the league was very solid, a lot of players came out of it. For instance, 1990. It was only three players that joined the local players from outside to get to the peak of the final against Algeria in 1990,” Agu reminisced.
