The €13m signing from Everton is at the lowest point of his career and should be on the move come January to revive his fortunes.
Henry Onyekuru is a forgotten man at Monaco. The Nigerian winger arrived at the Principality club in 2019 on the back of a hugely impressive loan spell at Galatasaray.
In the 2018-19 season in Turkey, Onyekuru scored 16 goals with an additional six assists to lead Galatasaray to a league and cup double. If not for paperwork issues, Onyekuru would have returned to Everton and might well be playing in the Premier League now.
The Merseyside club had signed the winger from KAS Eupen in 2017 after some eye-catching displays in Belgium. After failing to secure his work permit, Everton loaned him out to Anderlecht for the 2017-18 season.
The same trend continued the season after and it was then at Galatasaray that he shone most. But after the two loan spells, Onyekuru was still not granted his UK work permit. Everton becomes fed up and decided to cash out on the Nigerian. He left having not made a single appearance for the Toffees.
Since making the permanent move to France last year, Onyekuru is yet to find his feet and it doesn’t look like he’ll ever do. In his first six months at Monaco, the 23-years-old saw limited playing time and was also blighted by fitness problems. He was sent out on loan to Galatasaray for the second half of last season.
Since his return, things haven’t been different either. With four months into this current campaign, Onyekuru has made just four appearances for Monaco, and the last dating back to September when he came on in the 83rd against Rennes in a Ligue 1 game. The Nigerian international has been on the sidelines ever since.
With the January transfer window approaching, Onyekuru has been linked with another spell at Galatasaray where he is said to have a good rapport with the coach and fans of the club.
As things stand, Onyekuru is surplus to requirements at the Stade Louis II club and is believed to be keen on a move elsewhere to revitalise his career.
