Nigerian left-back Zaidu Sanusi shone at left-back as FC Porto defeated Tondela 3-1 on Sunday to capture the Taca de Portugal.
Porto were huge favourites going into the final, and the newly crowned Portuguese Primeira Liga champions were too strong for relegated Tondela.
Mehdi Taremi and Vitinha scored two goals between halftime to give Porto a 2-0 lead, before Neto Borges halved the deficit for Tondela with a bullet header in the 73rd minute.
Tondela’s goal proved to be a mere consolation as Porto recovered their two-goal lead a few seconds later when Taremi finished a beautifully lofted through ball from Otavio. Sanusi was involved in the build up to the goal. The fullback had driven into the box before his deflected pass made its way to Otavio, who provided a superb assist.
Porto held on for the win to claim their 18th Taça de Portugal, also sealing a domestic league and cup double in the process. Sanusi played the entire 90 minutes.
“What a magical way to end the season. Big team effort. Alhmdulillah masha vamos FC Porto,” the 24-year-old wrote on social media.
Sanusi scored the game-winning goal in the 93rd minute against Benfica on May 7, to seal the 2021/22 Portuguese league title for Porto. He has now won three trophies with the Dragons having won the Supertaça Cândido de Oliveira, the Portuguese Super Cup in 2020.
