Princess Chukwudumebi Agu, co-founder of PDWheels Media and co-convener of the Amazons Tennis Tournament in partnership with Lagos Lawn Tennis Club, shared her journey and future plans for the event during an interview with Sports247. The tournament, held to mark International Women’s Day, was the maiden edition of the event.
When asked about what inspired the event, Agu said, “What inspired me? My friend inspired me because she’s the brain behind this whole idea. She brought up the idea, and we spoke about it and I said, okay, let’s see how we can pull this off. And yeah, that’s what you’re seeing today.”
When asked about challenges faced during the planning of the event, she admitted, “Money, of course! We did not really overcome it, but with a few friends, family, and personal support here and there, we could do at least what you can see here today. We thank God and, of course, the few sponsors that jumped on board to support us with their products.”
Looking ahead, Agu expressed plans to expand partnerships. “Future events, yes. We’re looking to partner and are open to collaborations from not just the club but other brands too. It might even go international.”
On the tournament’s impact, she explained, “We are also going to do an exhibition match for our younger ones, and we hope this will bring more women into the world of sports. Tennis is fun, it’s interesting, and you get to meet a lot of people.”
When asked if she plays tennis, Agu revealed, “I just started playing in November—less than five months ago, courtesy of my friend and partner who has been playing the sports for a long time”
For a fun twist, Agu was asked which tennis legend or celebrity she would invite to the tournament with reasons. She responded with so much excitement “It has to be Roger Federer. I’ve always loved the way he played, his sportsmanship, and his style. I love him to bits. He is my choice because I believe his presence would bring great inspiration to the event.”
The Amazons Tennis Tournament 2025 maiden edition was a successful event that drew over 70 female players from all over Lagos State to celebrate women, passion, skill, friendship and networking under one roof.
