“We Won’t Go Down Without a Fight” – Olufemi Famuyiwa Vows After Gateway United’s Dramatic Draw

In a pulsating encounter at the Dan Anyiam Stadium, I was proud to help Gateway United snatch a dramatic 2-2 draw against Kun Khalifat — but I know the journey is far from over.

After the final whistle, the reality was clear: we are not where we want to be on the table. Every match at this level demands caution, focus, and absolute determination. We cannot afford to slip — and we won’t. We still believe we have what it takes to survive this season. We may have started badly, but that doesn’t mean we must end badly.

The match itself was a rollercoaster. We controlled much of the early exchanges with Olanese Saburi, Odusina Sunkanmi, and Christian Samuel creating several openings, but somehow the first-half breakthrough eluded us.

Kun Khalifat found the net first, converting a penalty in the 62nd minute after an unfortunate handball. Our goalkeeper Olamilekan Balogun kept us alive later with a crucial penalty save, a moment that lifted all our spirits.

Babatunde Taofeek then stunned everyone with a spectacular 45-metre lob, leveling the scores and breathing fresh hope into our ranks. But just when it looked like we would leave with at least a point, Kun Khalifat struck again in stoppage time.

Still, we refused to give up. Deep into added time, I found myself in the right place. Skipping past two defenders, I kept my composure and slotted the ball home to seal a hard-earned point. That moment wasn’t just about the goal — it was a statement that Gateway United will fight till the very end.

Coach Festus Allen praised our fighting spirit after the match, and rightly so. “We aimed for victory, but a point away from home is very rewarding,” he said. “The boys showed real composure.”

Now, we regroup. We have a break on Matchday 16, but our focus is already on the next battle against First Bank FC at the Dipo Dina Stadium. We still believe. We still fight. We will not go down.
