Following his team’s 3-1 match week 5 victory over Heartland Fc in Port Harcourt, Rivers United head coach, Stanley Eguma has stated that his side needed the win to help bring back their winning mentality, as well as boost their confidence, heading into the return leg tie of their CAF Confederation Cup match against Bloemfontein Celtic.
Rivers United defeated Heartland Fc 3-1 on Sunday, which extended their winning streak to 5 wins from 6 outings in all competitions, as they sit top of the NPFL standings, amassing 12 points from a possible 15 points after 5 matches played so far in the league season.
Speaking with Sports247 after the match, Eguma stated that with his side’s 1-0 loss to Wikki Tourists in midweek, it is very important for his team to return to winning ways ahead of the Confederation Cup return leg tie with Bloemfontein Celtic, as he admitted that the win will serve as a morale booster and give them more confidence going into the all-important Continental second leg tie against the South Africans.
“We knew we were going to have a very big fight. We expected a very tough game like this and by the grace of God, we were able to win.
“We had to work extra hard to get the three points today. It was a hard-earned one. The way Heartland came fighting from all corners and at the end of the day, we rose up to the occasion and picked the three points”.
“It’s a good one for us at least it will also bring back confidence into the team. And especially now that we are going back to the continent to play a continental game, this match is going to raise the morale of the players for us to continue to be on a winning streak, that winning mentality that we return back to play the South African team,” Stanley Eguma stated.
Rivers United defeated Bloemfontein Celtic away from home in the 1st leg 2-0 and will qualify for the next stage of the competition if they avoid a 2 goal margin defeat against the South African outfits in Port Harcourt.
