Technical representative on the board of gymnastics federation of Nigeria, Anthony Asuquo has stated that lack of creativity at federation level is what is killing gymnastics in Nigeria
Mr Asuquo who was answering online questions on ‘exclusivenews platform’ said gymnastics is the mother of all sports and is one of the most followed sport in USA and south Africa.
According to him ‘in America,
gymnastics alone has created over 40,000 jobs and in Africa many people have benefited in scholarships from big universities because of the sport
‘However, the gymnastics federation of Nigeria which is the custodian of gymnastics in Nigeria lacks creativity which has hampered the growth of the sport in Nigeria’
Mr Asuquo who is an internationally certified gymnastics coach by International Gymnastics Federation, IGF, went further by saying that ‘what the federation needs is to sell ideas to coaches at grassroot level on how they can introduce the game to schools and parents at grassroots level and also be able to generate money that will cover their expenses, unfortunately nobody is selling the ideas to the coaches which has stunted the growth of the game.
‘Gymnastics is not like football where you can pick some of the skills on the street rather you need training and being exposed to the sports at a young age which is where the federation comes in but we have been lacking in that regard,’ he concluded.
