Super Eagles defender Williams Troost-Ekong believes that the team’s performance was impressive despite losing 1-0 to La Tri of Ecuador in their second friendly match of the United States tour played in New Jersey, United States in the early hours of Friday.
A 3rd-minute goal by Villarreal’s defender Pervis Estupinan handed Jose Peseiro his second defeat in what was his second game in charge of the Super Eagles after his first loss came in a 2-1 defeat to Mexico.
At the post-match conference, the Eagles’ Vice-Captain stated that there were improvements in the team, especially in their first half compared to that of the game against Mexico.
“First of all, I think it was a good performance from the boys. We have only been working with our new Head Coach for only 5-6 training sections.
It was an improvement from what we showed against Mexico, especially in the first half. I think we gave the strong Ecuadorian team a good game and I think we deserve a little bit more in the end.”
He further said that the only takeaway from the match for the players is to use the game to correct their mistakes going into the next match.
“One thing we definitely want is to make use of this game to improve our games and understand what the coach wants. Of course, the important games are the next two matches to be played in Africa and I hope we can correct our mistakes by the time we play against Sierra Leone next week,” he concluded.
Jose Peseiro would be seeking his first win in charge of the team when Nigeria begin their 2023 AFCON qualification campaign against the Leone Stars of Sierra Leone at the MKO Abiola Stadium, Abuja on Thursday, 9th June 2022.
