“We Lost Because Our Foreign Players Missed Their Flights” – Robo Reflects On SFCOBA 94Set Novelty Match

Bakre Mufutau Gbenga, popularly known as Robo, captain of the Commercial and Art Class team, opened up about the reasons behind their 2-0 loss to the Science Class during the SFCOBA 94Set novelty football match.

The game, held on December 6th, 2024, at the St. Finbarr’s College field, was a thrilling encounter, but Robo revealed that unforeseen circumstances impacted his team’s performance.

Speaking after the match, Robo said, “We came prepared. It’s not because they are better than us; it’s just that the formation was planned with our foreign players in mind.

Unfortunately, most of them missed their flights and couldn’t join us for the game. That threw our strategy off balance.”

The match saw the Science Class dominate from the start. In the first half, they earned a penalty after ID Cabasa was fouled in the box.

However, the penalty was missed, keeping the scoreline level until Chris scored the first goal for the Science Class following a brilliant assist from Dr. Thaddeus Ugwueke, the Chairman of the Anniversary Committee.

The second half saw the Science Class extend their lead through Uti’s spectacular volley, which left Robo and his team unable to recover. Despite the loss, Robo commended his teammates for their resilience.

“We gave it our all, even without our full squad. Losing doesn’t define us. It’s about the effort and the memories we’ve created here. We’ll be back stronger next time,” Robo remarked with optimism.

The novelty match, a major highlight of the SFCOBA 94Set 30th Anniversary Celebration, may have ended in a loss for the Commercial and Art Class team, but it reinforced the spirit of camaraderie, sportsmanship, and the enduring connections shared by the alumni.
