In a week of unprecedented drama stemming from the team’s home loss to their former coach Fidelis Ilechukwu’s team, Heartland FC, other poor results in the last couple of games and losing both their first team coach and assistant rather shockingly, Lagos based side, MFM FC has quickly made moves to progress and forget these trying times behind them.
MFM FC lost to Heartland FC 2-1 at the Soccer temple, Agege in match day nine of the Nigerian Professional Football League, a result which meant the Olukoya Boys have now failed to win any of their last six league games with their last win coming in Matchday three of the season where they defeated Sunshine Stars of Akure 1-0 at home.
Since then, the Olukoya Boys played a draw in their next four games and then lost two games on the back of the draws which means after picking up six of nine available points in the first three games of the season, the Lagos side have only picked four points of available 18pts afterwards, the most recent loss against Heartland and former boss feeling like the team had lost a cup final.
Amidst this poor run of form, news broke out on Wednesday, 10th February, 2021 that the club had parted ways with both coach and assistant. The assistant coach, Yemi was seen to have dropped a tweet about his resignation on social media.
The club however have appointed Gabriel Olalekan Olusola as interim coach and he swung into action swiftly when he led his team to a 1-0 win over Joy Cometh FC who are preparing for the start of the Nigerian National League season.
“We’re trying to do something tangible, we know where we are on the table and that is the reason we played this game, to prepare the boys ahead of the task in Kano which we believe he boy will do well. I can bet you that the boys are doing well now irrespective of what’s on ground and I believe by going to Kano, we will pick a atleast a point or three points,” said coach Gabriel in an interview with Sports247.
Coach Gabriel was remembered to have taken charge of the team some time last year during a period of crisis and one of the games he took charge was hosting Kano Pillars at the Agege Stadium which he won 3-1. The coach now fully in charge of the position and facing Kano Pillars next again, was quizzed about being under pressure to deliver against this opponent.
“I leave everything to the hands of God, he’s behind me and the team as well as the confidence from Dr D.K Olukoya, I believe the same thing will repeat itself by God’s grace,” he said.
“I want to say to Lagos fans that this team can never go to relegation. All hands are on deck with all the coaches here, we’re working hand in hand with love, as well as with the players and management and we believe the team can never ever go to relegation. I know we’re still going to bounce back and surprise Lagos fans. Our results will bring more fans to the field,” he added.
MFM FC next face Kano Pillars in Matchday Ten of the NPFL and they sit in 14th on the log with 10 points from 9 games, just a point above the relegation zone.
