Expressing his aspirations for Nakamura Strikers FC, David’s goal is unequivocal: “For my team to go straight to the finals.” His unwavering confidence in the team’s potential is a testament to the dedication and hard work that drives Nakamura Strikers FC forward.
Reflecting on the team’s recent performance, David conveyed his satisfaction with their display on the field: “I am very happy with the team’s performance. They played up to expectations. In the game of football, one cannot be perfect and as a manager, one has to make corrections. When one sees lapses in play, he has to call the players to order. We will get to the finals, we are carrying the cup, we are winning the tournament.”
In the context of grassroots football development in Nigeria, David elucidated the multifaceted challenges players encounter beyond the pitch. He acknowledged that many players grapple with various challenges at home, necessitating comprehensive support systems. Nakamura Strikers FC is committed to providing medical facilities and monthly stipends to alleviate these challenges. David emphasized the significance of mentorship and parental engagement in guiding aspiring talents.
“In Nigeria, grassroots football is not easy because some players face a lot of challenges at home and so we have to offer a lot of support to them. We have medical facilities for our players and give them stipends every month. Most of them do not have the support of their parents to play football and most time, we have to go and talk to the parents and convince them to let these boys play and discover their talent on the field. To develop grassroots football in Nigeria is not easy.”
Beyond honing football skills, Nakamura Strikers FC emphasizes holistic development. The club’s innovative approach includes a partnership with the Fashola vocational training centre. This collaboration enables interested players to acquire valuable life skills during the day while pursuing their football aspirations in the evenings. David cited specific instances, showcasing how the team nurtures talents both on and off the field.
“We encourage the boys to also acquire life skills. We have a partnership with the Fashola vocational training centre and we pick forms for those who are interested to go and learn the skill of their choice. At least, they will be in the vocational training centre from 8 am till 1 pm and have time to train in the evenings. That is the support we give them. We have a fashion designer and a barber on the team. That is how we run the team.”
Bankole Idowu David’s perspective underscores the intricate blend of football excellence and personal growth that Nakamura Strikers FC champions, illuminating the transformative potential of grassroots football in Nigeria.
