Nigeria has officially entered the mixed martial arts sports terrain, following the introduction of a programme for the event in the country by Warrior Sport Championship, sports247.ng learnt.
Sports247.ng learnt that the body’s president, Jeff Taylor is pioneering the project, for which he has received strong backing from Nigeria’s martial arts stakeholders.
Taylor explained that Mixed Martial Arts is a global sports that has been in existence for a long time and has competitions at various levels.
He said competitions are staged by UFC and Strike Force in United States, TKO in Canada and EFC in South Africa among others, adding that Nigeria’s huge population makes the country conducive to also adopt the sport.
The pioneer in Nigeria further said he is happy that mixed martial arts has come to stay in the country, which he says has all it takes to become one of the world best in the sport.
Taylor expatiated: “Mixed martial arts is a fusion of all the combat sports like boxing, wrestling, kicking boxing, taekwondo, karate among others.
“It is the fastest growing combat sport in the world. We will compete among ourselves and organize championships with a view to getting out the best from among us for international challenges.”
