An Archibong Philips’ double in either side of halftime was enough for Warri Wolves to conquer Cynosure FC of Abakaliki 2 – 0 in their second game in the 2021 Ughelli Nigeria National League NNL Invitational Super 4 Tournament at the Warri City Stadium, Warri on Friday, December 3.
Philips opened scoring in the 43 minutes of the encounter, when he headed in a cross from the right flank after a well worked build-up play by the Seasiders.
Less than three minutes into the second half, Philips stepped up to take a free kick from a very promising position at the edge of the 18-yard box and scored his second goal of the tie with a thunderous hit.
Speaking on the performance of the striker, Warri Wolves’ technical adviser, Sam Omiponle, praised Philips for his quality in front of goal.
He said the striker was making his debut for the Seasiders formally with the Cynosure FC clash.
“Today is the first game he ever played with us,” Omiponle said.
“You know when we started the game, he started losing chances. I called him to calm him down, reassuring him he can do it.”
“The outcome of the game was the reflection of that pep talk on the sideline.”
The Seasiders will take Excellent FC on Saturday, December 4 in the continuation of the competition.
