The oil rich terrain of Warri/Effurun in Delta State will come alive this Saturday, as runners gather to compete in another marathon race of note, in Nigeria’s south-south geo-political zone.
Sports247.ng gathered that 3,000 elite athletes have registered to take part in the 2019 Warri/Effurun Peace Marathon, a 10km race billed to start at Airport Road junction and terminate at Warri Township Stadium.
Top Nigerian runners, Adamu Muazu, Adamu Shehu, Emmanuel Gwon Gyan, Gideon Goyet, Deborah Pam, Faustina Ogah and Elizabeth Nuhu will be among those gunning for the N300,000 prize money in both the male and female categories.
CEO of the marathon, Joyce Bozimo said the race, which is to promote peace and unity in Warri and its environs, began in 2016 and has grown to become one of the long distance races athletes yearn for in Nigeria.
Bozino affirmed that everything has been put in place to ensure that they have a peaceful and successful outing for the athletes and officials.
She disclosed that the race will be flagged off by a representative of the governor of Delta State, Senator (Dr) Ifeanyi Okowa at 7am on Saturday.
“Though things are tough with regards to sponsorship we are pushing ahead. The idea behind the event is what is pushing us on.
“We are good to go and I expect the athletes to put in their best and come up with world standard performances,” Bozimo concluded.
