Nigeria’s Golden Eaglets Tuesday evening thrashed the young Sparrow Hawks of Togo 3-1 to cruise into the semifinals of the on going WAFU-B U17 championship in Cape Coast, Ghana.
The team continued from the brilliant start of thrashing Ghana 4-2 in the first game to claiming a semi final spot after today’s win which automatically leaves them just a game away from an AFCON spot.
Kevwe Iyede scored Nigeria’s first while Precious Williams doubled the lead and scored his second of the tournament.
The Togolese pulled one back via Komi Ahouankpo’s misjudged freekick but substitute Light Eke bagged his tournament’s second and sealed the game for the Eaglets.
Emmanuel Michael would be the star of the match as he was awarded his second man of the match award at full time. The left back was impressive all through and had scored a terrific freekick in the first game.
Reacting to the win, coach of the Golden Eaglets, Nduka Ugbade said his team still has lots of work to do in the tournament.
“I would not say that (being the tournament’s favourite), there are 7 teams in this competition, I’m not only satisfied with winning, all the time I look forward to the process of winning, this is my personal rule.”
Nigeria awaits their Semi final opponents from group B that has Cote D’Ivoire, Burkina Faso, Niger and Benin Republic.
