Nigeria will be facing Ghana, Togo, Benin republic, Niger, Ivory Coast, and Burkina Faso for the maiden West After Football Union (WAFU) U20 Nations Cup, scheduled to hold in Ghana between May 20 and June 4, 2023.
The tournament, organized by the West African Football Union Zone B, will see seven countries compete for the title. Apart from Nigeria, the other participating nations include Ghana, Niger, Benin, Ivory Coast, Togo, and Burkina Faso.
According to organizers, the competition which will be hosted in Kumasi at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium and Dr. Kwame Kyei Sports Complex will see the Nigeria U20 side take on their fellow WAFU Zone B counterparts.
Nigeria’s U20 side also known as the Falconets have dominated the continent over the years.
In the African U-20 World Cup qualification, the Falconets won the championship title and qualified for the World Cup 10 times.
They have represented Africa at every edition of the U20 FIFA Women’s World Cup, winning the Silver medal twice and finishing in the quarter-final stage of the last edition held in Costa Rica in August 2022.
As more countries from the continent express interest to participate on the global stage, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) has now evolved more means of accommodating them.
