WAFU B Tourney: Sports Minister Congratulates Golden Eaglets On 2023 AFCON Qualification

The Minister For Youth and Sports Development, Sunday Dare has congratulated Nigeria’s U-17 boys, Golden Eaglets on their qualification to the final of the ongoing U-17 WAFU B tourney in Ghana and securing a ticket to 2023 U-17 AFCON tournament billed for Algeria.

Nigeria came back from a goal behind to thrash the Baby Elephants of Côte d’Ivoire 3-1 on Tuesday evening in the first semi final fixture thanks to two freekick goals by Emmanuel Michael and a powerful header from Abubakar Idris Abdullahi to book a spot in the final of the WAFU B Tourney and a spot at the 15th edition of the Africa U-17 Cup of Nations.

While congratulating the team on their victory, the Sports Minister slated the youngsters’ fighting spirit and their determination.

He also commended the coaching staff and other members of the squad for laying a successful foundation and urged the boys to emulate their U20 counterparts who won the U-20 edition of the WAFU B tournament in Niger earlier this month.

“I congratulate you for doing the most difficult part of the job in such a commanding manner. I salute your fighting spirit and determination. I commend your coaches, officials and the Nigeria Football Federation(NFF) for laying the foundation for this success.

“I urge you to finish this assignment the same way your seniors, the Flying Eagles did in Niamey, Niger Republic last month. Go and win the final. I know you can do it.

“I want you to know that the whole of Nigeria is behind you. You have nothing to be afraid of. You are great Nigerian ambassadors already and we will be waiting to receive you with the trophy after the final,” Dare stated.

Golden Eaglets will face their Burkina Faso counterparts who defeated host nation Ghana by a lone goal on Tuesday night in the final of the tournament on Friday, June 24, 2022 at the Cape Coast Stadium.
