WAFA Chairman Adeboye Shoneye underlines plans for the development of the Women’s Amateur League

Women Amateur Football Association (WAFA) League chairman, Adeboye Shoneye has revealed the steps being undertaken for the development of the women’s grassroots league.

WAFA is the third tier of the Nigerian female league behind the Nigeria Women Pro – League and the Nigeria Women Premier League.

According to Shoneye, measures are being put in place for the expansion of the division.

“We are working to make WAFA to be recognized by the Nigerian Football Federation,” Shoneye disclosed to Sports247.

“Coming together with the Lagos state FA will help this league and its going to make the league to grow. We have had a series of meetings with the Lagos FA.

“They have talked to us on what we can do to move forward. And I know, very soon we will get to Abuja and sort every issue of WAFA league there.”

Shoneye claims that the amateur league serves as production line of talents from which players are poached by higher clubs.

“Most of the professional teams comes to pick players when it’s time for their pre-season and league campaign. They come down to WAFA league to pick players.

“Right now, so many players from WAFA are in different clubs. Some are in Rivers, Delta, Nasarawa and Kogi. So that is the difference of WAFA league out of the amateur leagues in Nigeria.” Shoneye stated.
