It was rather a scenario usually witnessed in the game of football for those that win trophy or medals for their states or nations but this time around the game of handball has opened doors for some young lads as the Executive Governor of Kogi state governor, Yahaya Bello has offered full State Government Scholarship up to higher institution level to the Kogi State under 21 and 18 male and female handball players who returned home with prizes from the just concluded Handball Tournament held in Lagos, sports247.ng reports.
The visibly happied governor made this known at the Banquet Hall of the State Government while receiving the teams that won the bronze trophy and under 18 female and male that won the bronze and gold trophy respectively.
He also thanked them for representing the State and making the State proud as he noted that they were well deserving of every praise.
Sports247.ng also noted that Governor Bello affirmed that although children were regarded to as the leaders of tomorrow, their victory has however validated that they were truly the leaders of today.
The Governor however thanked the teams and their coaches for their efforts and hardwork invested into ensuring a successful and victorious outing at the competition While Governor Bello noted that the young ones have clearly shown believe in themselves, he also inspired them to remain steadfast to achieve whatever they set out to do.
The Head Coach of Kogi U18 team, Peter Philip said his players made him an accomplished man at the just concluded National U18 and 21 handball championships in Lagos. Kogi state defeated highly rated Lagos state 42-34 in the final of the U18 male game.
He however charged them against acts of thuggery or criminality and again assured them as ambassadors in Government they would not be disappointed.
He also expressed that as a sport lover, he was committed to ensuring the gross development of other sporting activities so as to further consolidate on the gains in the sport sector in the last three years.
Earlier, The Commissioner for Youths and Sports Development Honourable Salisu Ogu acknowledged that the success recorded by the ministry was solely a function of the Governor’s commitment to supporting the sector which he always said was his constituency.
He affirmed that the Youth and Sport Sector of the State was unarguably emerging as a pacesetter and a role model for other States of the country.
