Ex Nigeria international, Victor Moses, has come to the aid of financially downtrodden Wigan Athletic as he rallies behind the struggling side in order to sustain their existence as he calls on everyone associated with the club to protect the future of the League 1 side.
The Chelsea winger who spent last season on loan with Inter Milan was a fans favorite during his spell at the DW Stadium between 2010 and 2012, has contributed a figure – believed to be worth £20,000 – to the Wigan Athletic Supporters’ Club’s official Crowdfunder page.
The donation from the former Nigeria international has taken the fundraising total to over £650,000, which supporters hope will help secure them an active role in the future ownership of the club, which went into administration in July.
“When Victor got in touch to say he wanted to help by donating such a substantial amount, I just couldn’t believe what I was hearing – it’s such an incredible gesture,” chairperson Caroline Molyneux told the official Wigan Athletic Supporters’ Club website.
“Victor wanted to make the donation and remain anonymous but we simply had to make sure he gets the recognition he deserves.”
“We’ve reached our initial target, but now we are working to make our voices even stronger. Every extra pound we raise will increase our chances of representing the fans on our club’s board, and make the voice of our supporters stronger as we work to save our club.”
Moses Tweeted: Wigan Athletic will always have a special place in my heart. I have so many incredible memories from my time there and the people of Wigan & everyone associated with the club have always been so good to me and my family. We must do all we can to protect the future of this great club.” https://t.co/MgWALX35Nh
