Former Nigerian international Victor Moses has won the Russian Cup with Spartak Moscow after they defeated Dynamo Moscow 2-1 in the final on Sunday. The 31-year-old played for the entirety of the game as Red-and-Whites sank their perennial rivals to win the domestic crown for a record 14th time.
Alexander Sobolev gave Spartak the lead in the 10th minute after a through ball from Mikhail Ignatov, and they went into half-time with the 1-0 advantage. In the 55th minute, Arsen Zakharyan equalized for Dynamo, albeit from a heavy deflection.
Spartak regained the lead in the 72nd minute when Quincy Promes scored from a counter attack. The Dutch winger rounded the Dynamo goalkeeper before tapping the ball into an empty net.
Dynamo had the chance to force extra time after they were awarded a penalty in stoppage time following a VAR review. However, Daniil Fomin fluffed his line from 12 yards with the kick of the game.
Moses put in a good shift from the left wing back position to aid his side to the win. The former Chelsea star has now won his first silverware with Spartak and the sixth overall of his career. He won a Premier League title with Chelsea in 2016/17, an FA Cup in 2017/18 and two Europa League’s (2012/13 & 2018/19). He also won the 2013 African Cup of Nations with Nigeria where he scored two goals in the tournament.
Moses joined Spartak permanently from Chelsea last summer after spending the previous campaign with the club on loan, ending his nine year association with the English club. He retired from international duty with Nigeria after the 2018 World Cup. He made 38 appearances and scored 12 goals during his six years with the Super Eagles.
