This year’s event promises to be a celebration of skill, camaraderie, and the enduring spirit of football among retired players.
The competition will commence with a seminar designed to educate veteran players and officials on their roles, rules, regulations, and the opportunities available through the competition.
This initiative, led by Barrister Ifeanyi Dike of the Imo State FA, aims to promote wellness and networking among ex-players and their fans, who have had limited contact with them since their retirement.
A thrilling encounter between Uzie na Abosi All Stars and Fit Friends All Stars will mark the beginning of the tournament at the practice pitch of Dan Anyiam Stadium.
This event will also feature the presence of two former African Footballers of the Year, Coach Emmanuel Amuneke and Ambassador Kanu Nwankwo, along with other distinguished guests. The venue, iconic for hosting the last continental football final in the country in 2009, will once again become a hub of football excitement and nostalgia.
Originally scheduled to start with a seminar on the first day of August, the event faced a slight delay due to the nationwide hunger protest.
The seminar will now be held on 4th August at the Imo State Football Association office in Owerri. Casmir Mbachu, Chairman of the Organizing Committee, noted that while the home and away format was initially planned, economic challenges necessitated a change in the tournament structure.
Neville Okere, Secretary of the Organizing Committee, expressed gratitude to the teams for their participation and assured them of a well-organized competition. Dinamo Dinamic, the defending champions, were the first to register and are confident in their ability to retain the title.
This year’s Imo State Football Association Veterans Football Competition is set to be a grand showcase of talent, unity, and the undying love for the beautiful game.
“Despite economic challenges, we are committed to delivering a smooth and exciting tournament for all teams involved,” said Neville Okere, Secretary of the Organizing Committee. “We appreciate the enthusiasm and support from all participants.”
