Former Flying Eagles coach, Godwin ‘Koko’ Uwua has faulted the preponderance of government-owned clubs in the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL), as he believes it accounts for lack of continuity for coaches in charge of the respective teams.
Following the recent resignations of some coaches from their respective clubs, the former Lobi Stars of Makurdi technical adviser told sports247.ng attributed it to pressure from government officials.
Uwua argued that government ownership of clubs in the country makes it such that the sponsors are only interested in short term results and will seek to change the technical crew if things are not going as planned.
He stressed: “Once a government is funding a club, they will run the club like a part of the ministry, and they will want immediate results.
“Once the results they desire are not coming, there will always be issues between the coach and the management.
“This kind of situation is what most of our league clubs are facing at present, but it is detrimental to the growth of the domestic league.”
