The U.S. Embassy has ended the two months Global Sports Mentoring Program and Paralympic Tournament for one hundred students with disabilities.
Ekwi Ajide of our Abuja Bureau reports that the programme organised in conjunction with the Nigeria Paralympic Committee selected students from five schools in Abuja who were tutored on leadership, mentoring, and understanding the disability rights in Nigeria.
The Country Public Affairs Officer at the United States Embassy, Abuja, Mr Haruna Amirthanayagam who disclosed this during the tournament in Abuja said the program is also to advocate and Promote sportsmanship in the physically challenged persons to ensure inclusiveness, hoping that some of them will be selected to go to the U.S later in the year.
According to him, the students have been working hard in the past two months of the training and hoped the physical exercise will further help boost their talents.
In his address, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Disability represented by Mr Prince David noted that the implementation process for the bill for Disability Commission will be passed in no distant time.
He disclosed that the Presidential Disability Dialogue has created a forum were the disabled will have direct interface with President Buhari so as to table their challenges.
The Minister of Youth and Sports Development, Mr Sunday Dare represented by a Deputy Director in the Ministry, Mrs Joyce Ezealaugwu-Ogundare promised to support students with disabilities through a partnership with the US government to ensure the objective of the parasports is achieved.
Also commenting, the President, Paralympic Committee Nigeria, Brigadier General Emico Eruwa said parasports is a welcome development as they have been saving grace for Nigeria sports.
