Musa Nurain, a student at the University of Ilorin, has expressed his ambition to break
records at the upcoming World University Games. Nurain is one of the 75 student-athletes
chosen from 22 universities to compete in seven different sports disciplines.
The selection process took place during trials held in Benin City, Edo State. Nigeria,
alongside other nations, will participate in the competition scheduled to take place from July 27 to August 8 in Chengdu, China.
These exceptional athletes were discovered, trained, and nurtured in Nigerian universities,
where they were able to reach their full potential. Nigeria is expected to vie for honors in
track and field, swimming, badminton, judo, taekwondo, table tennis, and tennis.
Nurain, an 18-year-old track athlete from Kwara State, spoke to Pulse Sports Nigeria,
sharing his aspirations of setting records at the World University Games.
He views the event as a tremendous opportunity to become the fastest student in the world, acknowledging the stiff competition he will face from the swiftest students across the globe.
Determined to excel, he stated, “Nothing but the best, it’s a great opportunity to head out
there to become the fastest student in the world. I’ll be competing with the fastest students across the globe, so I have to be there with my A-game.”
Nurain’s journey in athletics began during his time in secondary school, initially as a fun
pursuit. However, his talent and potential were recognized when he was selected for the
U-17 youth games, marking a turning point towards a more serious approach to the sport.
Currently a 300-level student at UNILORIN, he aims to secure medals for Nigeria in China.
In addition to Nurain, four other athletes from the University of Ilorin, namely Ruqqayah
Mustapha (a talented discus thrower), Usman Qudus, Sofiat Obanishola (badminton
players), and Aderibigbe Fareedah (taekwondo), have been chosen to proudly represent
their university and Nigeria at the World University Games.
As these student-athletes embark on this global platform, they embody the dedication and hard work nurtured within the Nigerian university system, serving as ambassadors for their country and aiming to bring glory to Nigeria through their exceptional performances.
