The coach of Owatapa FC, Ademola Agbana has saluted his players for getting the “job done” in the finals of the maiden edition of the Under-18 Ekiti Obas Cup after he saw them defeat Apeju FC on penalties.
Owatapa took the lead in the first ten minutes of the game before Apeju FC’s late equalizer pushed the game into extra time and further into penalties where they lost 6-5.
Speaking to Sports247 after his team’s victory on Tuesday evening, Ademola Agbana said that his players played according to instructions and it paid off in the end.
“They played to the instructions, they got the job done and we won. We recently just came back from a U-17 tournament in Osun state in which we won. We also went for a U-14 tournament that we won too.”
He went ahead to say “I so much believe in the players that they can beat their opponent today. Our actions are to encourage parents to allow their children to play football.”
He also lauded Apeju’s fighting spirit in the game.
“The other team played really well today, we know one another because we have practiced together, I’m very happy for them and this is not the end.”
The captain of the winning team, Uche Ifeanyi could only thank God because he believed that the better team lost.
“All I can do is to thank God for the victory, our opponent today, Apeju F.C were the better team today.”
In his reaction to his team’s loss, Apeju FC head coach, Okereke Henry stated that his players showed a lot of positives on the pitch today but believes they were unlucky to have missed out on the title.
“On today’s match, It was a very interesting one, I must confess. People’s comments about today’s match showed how impressive it was.”
Despite the loss, Apeju FC took home all the awards as Adebayo Toheeb’s five goals won him the golden boot, Olatubi Segun was named the Most Valuable Player, and goalkeeper, Olaley Silas clinched the Best Goalkeeper Award. Owatapa’s Uche Chinonso was named the Best Youngest Player.
