Uko Sylvanus John, hailing from Akwa Ibom, has successfully completed his two-year journey at the National Institute for Sports (NIS) to become a certified football coach.

His eyes brimming with excitement and determination, he shared his experiences and aspirations with Sports247 after concluding his exams on August 15th.
“I came to NIS to study and earn a diploma in Football coaching and training,” Uko Sylvanus John explained. “The journey began two years ago in January 2022, and I thank God that we have concluded our exams peacefully.”
When asked about his future plans at NIS, Uko expressed a desire to return for further studies. “If I am coming back here, it is to get a certificate in management.”
Reflecting on his time at NIS, he highlighted the enriching experience of meeting people from diverse backgrounds and forming lasting friendships. “My experience at NIS has been a nice one. I came and met so many new people from different backgrounds and religions, made new friends, nice people, and learned a lot of things from different individuals. I pray we meet again in the future.”
Uko is eager to apply the knowledge and skills he has acquired over the past two years. He currently works with ALGON FC, a team in the Nigeria National League (NLO). As he returns to the field, he anticipates exciting opportunities and a well-deserved promotion.
To aspiring coaches considering enrolling at NIS, Uko Sylvanus John offered words of encouragement. He acknowledged that financial constraints might deter some grassroots coaches from taking this crucial step. However, his own journey serves as a testament to perseverance. “I want to encourage the young coaches to apply as a start. Once they take the step, they will surely get to the end.”

He emphasized the importance of passion and determination. “Anything you have a passion for, you need to follow it in every aspect. There is nothing you cannot achieve as long as you have a passion for it.” With unwavering dedication and faith in his abilities, Uko envisions himself coaching a national team in the future, guided by the presence of the divine.
