UFC president Dana White reveals super fight between Israel Adesanya and Jon Jones could happen next but admits middleweight champion ‘has got a lot of options’

UFC president Dana White is weighing up the options for Israel Adesanya’s next opponent with a potential super fight on the cards.

The middleweight champion has shot himself to stardom following his emphatic title defence against Paulo Costa at UFC 253 in September. 

Adesanya has been in a long-running feud with light heavyweight Jon Jones and has teased about moving up a weight class to fight Jan Blachowicz.

White admitted that whilst talks of a super fight are interesting, he would like to see Adesanya defend his middleweight title against the rightful contender.

“We’ve got to talk to him,” White said at a UFC event in Abu Dhabi.

“That’s a fight we could definitely make. But I truly think that the winner of (Jared) Cannonier and (Robert) Whittaker should get the next shot. He said he would fight Cannonier. He already beat Whittaker. Whittaker, if he wins, makes a lot of sense, too.”

“It’s a great problem to have. The winner of this fight should absolutely get the shot. You could look at the Blachowicz fight and say, ‘Oh, that’s fun, too.’ Jon Jones is fun. He’s got a lot of options.”

Fans are calling out for the Jones bout, following their war of words for over a year. 

The pair have insulted family members, dug up criminal records and not held back with the expletives as their bitter feud has continued to keep fans on the edge of their seats hoping to see them settle their differences in the octagon.

White admitted that Adesanya is not in a bad position, with several options on the table for his next fight. 

“It’s never a bad thing when you have a lot of options,’ White added. ‘It would be worse if we were sitting here going, ‘Oh, who’s next?’ What do you do with this guy?” 

The 31-year-old will not fight again in 2020, however, as he is set to help team-mate Junior Fa prepare for a boxing match with Joseph Parker.

Despite White wanting to match the Nigerian up against Whitaker or Cannonier, he is eyeing up a shot at the light heavyweight belt in 2021.
