In a remarkable achievement, Udodi Onwuzurike has become Stanford University‘s first
200m champion in 84 years.
He secured the prestigious title at the NCAA Championships in Austin with a blazing time of 19.84 seconds, upgrading from his bronze medal performance in the previous year.
Onwuzurike, a sophomore student, exceeded expectations by delivering a phenomenal
performance. He set a personal best and the fastest qualifying time of 19.76 seconds in the semifinals, which ranks as the third fastest in collegiate history, trailing only Walter Dix (19.69s) and Divine Oduduru (19.73s).
Executing his race to perfection, Onwuzurike displayed an impressive start and executed the curve run flawlessly. Taking the lead on the home straight, he maintained his position to cross the finish line victoriously.
Courtney Lindsey of Texas Tech, the newly crowned NCAA 100m Champion, secured
second place with a personal best of 19.86 seconds, closely followed by Terrence Jones in
third place, also setting a personal best time of 19.87 seconds.
Throughout the season, Onwuzurike has consistently clocked sub-20-second times in the
200m, marking the fastest performances by a collegiate athlete. His times of 19.91s, 19.73s, and 19.78s represent the best sequence achieved by a Nigerian 200m runner in history.
In addition to his 200m success, Onwuzurike also competed in the 100m event, finishing in sixth place with a time of 9.98 seconds. This made him the first male Stanford sprinter to reach an NCAA 100m final since 1963.
At just 20 years old, Onwuzurike’s achievements thus far only scratch the surface of his
immense talent. His exceptional performances this season provide a glimpse of the
remarkable accomplishments he is poised to achieve in his promising career.
