The championships are set to kick off on August 19, but unfortunately, Onwuzurike’s hopes were dashed due to an injury sustained during the NCAA competition in the United States.

Onwuzurike, who recorded an impressive time of 19.76 seconds in the 200m earlier this year, couldn’t make a full recovery from his hamstring injury in time for the event.

His injury came as a blow after he participated in Nigeria’s National Trials in June and was a part of the country’s 4x100m relay team at the African Region 2 competition in Togo.

The Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) had high expectations for Onwuzurike, a former world U-20 champion and the winner of the 200m title at the 2023 NCAA outdoor track and field Championships in June.

His absence undoubtedly leaves a void in the lineup the AFN was banking on for potential podium finishes.

Despite his disappointment, the 20-year-old sprinter remains optimistic and determined to come back stronger.

In a heartfelt message shared on his Twitter page, Onwuzurike disclosed his decision to sit out this year’s World Championships due to his medical team’s advice, prioritizing his health and recovery over competing.

He mentioned that his body needs proper healing to avoid further damage.

Acknowledging the tough decision he had to make, Onwuzurike revealed his commitment and hard work leading up to the event and how disheartening it is to see his season come to an end in this manner.

He believes that this setback will only fuel his determination to return even stronger next year.

He extended his good wishes to his teammates and friends who are participating in the championships, urging them to do their best and make their country proud.

Onwuzurike assured his supporters that he will utilize this time to heal, recover, and prepare for his triumphant comeback.

While Onwuzurike’s absence is indeed a disappointment, his unwavering spirit and determination set a resilient example for athletes around the world.

As the World Championships draw near, his message of resilience and determination resonates, reminding us all of the highs and lows that come with the world of competitive sports.
