The 2022/23 UEFA Champions League round of 16 draw took place today in Nyon, Switzerland, and the Nigerian stars who remain in the competition have learned who their opponents will be.
Victor Osimhen (Napoli), Zaidu Sanusi (FC Porto) and Raphael Onyedika (Club Brugge) are the only Nigerians left in Europe’s premier club competition.
Osimhen and Napoli will face Eintracht Frankfurt in their last-16 tie. Napoli had won Group A, ahead of Liverpool, Ajax, and Rangers.
Sanusi appeared in all six group stage games for Porto, scoring one goal to help the Portuguese champions finish first in Group B, ahead of Onyedika’s Club Brugge, Bayer Leverkusen, and Atletico Madrid. In their round of 16 matchup, Porto will face Inter Milan.
Finally, Onyedika and Club Brugge will have to get the better of Benfica to reach the next knockout phase. The Belgian side progressed to the Champions League knockout stages for the first time in the club’s history this season after they finished second to Porto in Group B.
The 1st legs and 2nd legs of the round of 16 will be played in February and March 2023. UEFA will announce which games will be played when later on Monday.
