Calvin Bassey had a difficult day at work on Tuesday night, as his Ajax side was crushed 6-1 at home by Napoli in the UEFA Champions League, reports Sports247.ng.
Ajax drew first blood at the Johan Cruyff Arena when Ghana international Mohammed Kudus scored after only nine minutes. A goal-bound shot deflected off him and into the net.
Napoli, who were without Victor Osimhen, equalized when Giacomo Raspadori headed into the net in the 19th minute. The Serie A leaders went into the break with a comfortable 3-1 lead following more goals from Giovanni Di Lorenzo (33′) and Piotr Zielinski (45′).
Raspadori netted his second and Napoli’s fourth goal a few minutes into the second half to compound Ajax’s woes. Khvicha Kvaratskhelia (63′) and Giovanni Simeone (81′) both added their names to the score sheet to complete the mauling.
Super Eagles defender Bassey featured from start to finish while his international teammate, Osimhen was barely missed by Napoli who are top of Group A with 9 points from 3 matches. Ajax is third with three points. The Dutch side is below Liverpool (6 points) but ahead of Rangers who are without a point.
In other Champions League action, Zaidu Sanusi scored for Porto in their 2-0 victory over Bayer Leverkusen in Group B after coming off the bench.
In the same group, Frank Onyeka shone for Club Brugge as they picked up a 2-0 win over Atletico Madrid. The Nigerian midfielder won most duels (8), had 4 recoveries and completed 46 of his 52 attempted passes.
Brugge leads Group B with a perfect record. They are followed by Sanusi’s Porto, who have three points, as do Leverkusen and Atletico, who are third and fourth, respectively.
