Nigeria’s Discus event athlete Obiageri Pamela Amaechi has expressed her excitement over competing for Nigeria in the on-going Africa Senior Athletes Championship in Mauritius.
The U.S base athlete was full of joy in a competition which was tagged her first competitive game for Nigeria. Having come down from the United States to fly the green and white flags of Nigeria, she couldn’t be bolder to make her excitement known to fans that she is proud to compete for her place of origin.
The 23-year-old finished 3rd in the finals of the discus event with a mark of 54.44m which saw her clinching the bronze medal though she lost the gold to compatriot Chioma Onyekwere who successfully defended her championship won in Asaba Delta state in 2018 with a mark of 58.19m.
According to Obiageri, Onyekwere is a source of inspiration, not just to her alone, but also to the team in general as she is a very experienced athlete. ” Chioma Onyekwere is experienced and she inspires everyone in the team to do better” she says.
When asked about how she feels coming to Nigeria from America to compete and her plans after this Championship “my plan is to go to the national trials and from there qualify for the world championship. I have already qualified for the Common Wealth Games ” She answered enthusiastically.
She went futher emphasizing her zeal of wanting to always coming back home to mingle with both foreign and home based athletes “it’s a beautiful experience to meet athletes based both abroad and Nigeria, being surrounded by different people from different places. It’s a blessing to be here. I come to Nigeria regularly because I have families here and it’s important I visit regularly” she concluded.
After a wonderful performance, her gaze is now on the national trials and the common wealth games this season. Obiageri and Onyekwere were not the only Nigerian who competed for a place on the podium in the final of the discus event. Princess Kara is another Nigerian. Princess threw 51.15m mark, but was only good enough for a 5th position finish.
