Over 700 athletes and officials are expected to storm Kaduna, for the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) All-Comers competition. It is a three-in-one event, as U-18 and U-20 athletes will also participate in a trial to select Nigeria’s flagbearers for an Africa junior competition in Zambia in April.
The three competitions will hold at the Ahmadu Bello Stadium, Kaduna, from March 30 to 31. According to AFN Secretary General, Rita Mosindi, the competitions were moved from their earlier date of March 18 to 19 to March 30 to 31 because of the last Governorship and House of Assembly elections.
She hinted that the athletes and officials are expected to arrive in Kaduna today.
“We are using this event to select our U-18 and U-20 athletes for the African Championship in Zambia in April. Nigeria has to select the best athletes for that championship.”
Meanwhile, AFN President, Chief Tonobok Okowa, has urged the athletes to give the All Comers and U-18 and U-20 competitions in Kaduna the best attention it deserves.
“This is our first competition this year and I want the athletes to take it with the seriousness it deserves. In particular, our U-18 and U-20 athletes must be ready for the challenges ahead.
“For the All Comers, we expect a higher level of competition and output from athletes because the competition will help the federation to determine the rank of athletes in the various track and field events,” Okowa stated.
