Williams Troost-Ekong expressed his joy at being back in the Super Eagles squad for their upcoming 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying match against Sierra Leone.
The Watford-owned centre-back mentioned that the team has moved past the disappointment of missing out on the World Cup and is now focused on securing qualification for the Africa Cup of Nations to redeem themselves.
Troost-Ekong was unable to participate in the previous qualifying games against Guinea-Bissau due to injury. However, as one of the most experienced players called up by head coach Jose Peseiro, he is eager to regain his place in the starting XI for the crucial match against Sierra Leone, scheduled for Sunday, June 18. A draw in that game would ensure the Super Eagles’ participation in the Africa Cup of Nations, which will be held in Ivory Coast next year.
Speaking to reporters after training, Troost-Ekong described his excitement at returning to the national team, stating, “It has been amazing. I missed out in March because of injury. I want to support the team and play my part. I have always wanted to come back.” He acknowledged the painful memory of missing out on the World Cup but emphasized the team’s determination to qualify for the Africa Cup of Nations and make amends.
When asked about the importance of including home-based players in the squad, Troost-Ekong expressed his support. He commended the Nigerian Premier League and mentioned that witnessing the league’s final and seeing some of those players included in the squad was encouraging. He believed in the talent within the country and encouraged players to start their careers in Nigeria rather than immediately seeking opportunities abroad. Troost-Ekong highlighted the benefits of a blend of foreign and local professionals, both in terms of showcasing the skills of domestic players and providing valuable experience to them.
Regarding the possibility of playing in the Nigerian Professional Football League after his career abroad, Troost-Ekong responded positively. He referred to the example set by team captain Ahmed Musa, who returned to the league, and expressed his openness to the idea. He mentioned his hometown of Uyo as a potential destination and expressed his desire to contribute to the growth and development of Nigerian football.
Troost-Ekong’s return to the Super Eagles squad and his positive outlook reflect the team’s determination to secure qualification for the Africa Cup of Nations and make a strong statement in the tournament. With his experience and leadership, Troost-Ekong’s presence will be crucial in the team’s quest for redemption and success.
