The Nigerian defender’s return is a significant boost for the Greek side as they prepare for the upcoming season.

Troost-Ekong, 30, had been a mainstay in PAOK’s defense prior to his injury at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). During the tournament, he emerged as a key figure for the Super Eagles, despite initial doubts about his role. His stellar performances earned him the Player of the Tournament award, as he scored three crucial goals from his defensive position.

Unfortunately, his AFCON campaign came at a cost. Troost-Ekong sustained a serious injury during the tournament, which saw him playing the final with substantial discomfort. Post-tournament, he underwent surgery that sidelined him for the remainder of the season. His recovery journey kept him out of action, including PAOK’s crucial matches and the Super Eagles’ World Cup qualifiers against South Africa and Benin last month.

Despite his absence from competitive fixtures, Troost-Ekong remained active in the football community. He notably participated in an exhibition match in Nigeria to launch his foundation, showcasing his commitment to giving back to his roots and staying connected with the sport during his rehabilitation period.

In the friendly against AEK Larnaca, Troost-Ekong started the match and contributed significantly to PAOK’s defensive efforts, although he did not find the back of the net. His presence on the pitch was a welcome sight for fans and teammates alike. PAOK’s pre-season schedule includes further friendly encounters against Hibernian, Genk, and Union Berlin, providing Troost-Ekong with more opportunities to regain full match fitness ahead of the new league campaign.

His return is not only a morale booster for PAOK but also brings renewed hope for his continued influence in the Super Eagles setup as they prepare for future challenges.
