Ojo Yewande Elizabeth emerged as a standout figure in the recent Nigerian Amputee Football Federation’s “Kick for Love” tournament, showcasing her resilience and skill as the sole female player in Team Diamond.
Held on the 14th of January to commemorate love and inclusivity, the event brought together athletes from across the country to celebrate their shared passion for the game.
In an exclusive interview with Sports 247, Elizabeth shared her perspective on the significance of the tournament and her experiences as a female player in a predominantly male team.
“Concerning today’s game, it’s a game of love. Just to show love amongst ourselves as people with disability,” expressed Elizabeth, highlighting the spirit of unity and camaraderie that permeated the event.
“Our president in his goodwill decided to bring up this match in order for us to celebrate.”
Reflecting on her role as the only female player in Team Diamond, Elizabeth emphasized the empowering nature of the sport.
“Being female and playing amongst the males makes me feel much more empowered because there is no discrimination,” she asserted.
“We are just one, both male and female, as a person with a disability. I think the game is just for love. There is no discrimination, so I believe we are just one and we play in love.”
Looking ahead to future challenges, Elizabeth revealed the team’s rigorous training regimen in preparation for the upcoming Female World Cup in Colombia.
“We are training hard for the upcoming female World Cup in Colombia. At least we train three times a week, twice in a day,” she disclosed, underscoring the dedication and commitment required to excel in the sport.
“It’s not an easy game. But God is our power and strength, we are pushing it and I believe we will get there.”
Confident in their abilities, Elizabeth expressed her team’s determination to make Nigeria proud on the global stage.
“We are going to make Nigeria proud. We are bringing home the cup, God willing,” she declared, embodying the spirit of optimism and perseverance that defines the Nigerian amputee football community.
