The Basketball Africa League (BAL) and New Fortress Energy Inc. announced that Tonny Drileba, who played for the City Oilers (Uganda) during the 2023 BAL Season, has been awarded the 2023 BAL Ubuntu Trophy for his impactful efforts in using basketball to positively influence the lives of youth in Uganda.
Drileba hosted regular basketball clinics and life-skills seminars for boys and girls in underserved communities in Kampala.

As an assistant coach for Angels Basketball Club, a professional women’s team in the Ugandan Basketball League, he actively participated in community outreach projects across the country, including youth clinics and life-skills seminars at Nakivale Refugee Camp in Western Uganda.
The BAL Ubuntu Trophy is an annual recognition presented to individuals or organizations that make a significant impact on the local community during the BAL season.
Drileba’s outstanding leadership and consistent community service efforts earned him this prestigious award.
In recognition of Drileba’s contributions, the BAL and New Fortress Energy will donate $5,000 to a charitable organization of his choice in Uganda.
Tonny Drileba expressed his humility and excitement about winning the award, hoping that it would bring more attention to the social issues he aims to address in his community.
He emphasized his commitment to continue empowering youth through basketball and contributing positive change to disadvantaged communities.
“I am extremely humbled to have won this award, which in all hope will shine more light on the social issues I have sought to tackle in my community,” said Drileba.
“Going forward, I am excited to continue working with the youth, empowering them through basketball and bringing positive change to the disadvantaged communities.”
BAL President Amadou Gallo Fall commended Drileba’s inspiring efforts, highlighting the transformative power of basketball in being a force for good beyond the court.
The BAL Ubuntu Trophy is a testament to outstanding leadership and acts of service that uplift people and communities.
Past winners of the BAL Ubuntu Trophy include Hichem Benayad-Cherif (Algeria’s Groupement Sportif des Pétroliers; 2021) and Jean-Jacques Nshobozwabyosenumukiza (Rwanda Energy Group Basketball Club; 2022).
