Tobi Amusan made history in the early hours of Monday morning after blazing to 12.12 in the semifinals, which set a World Record in the 100m hurdle event at the world track and field championships in Eugene, Oregon, and became Nigeria’s first World Champion after blazing to a 12:06(+2.5) in the final, Sports247 Nigeria reports.
Amusan capitalized on her epic performance in the first round on Saturday, where she ran 12.40 seconds to set a new African record.
With her incredible feat on Monday morning, she became the first woman in history to run below the 12.20 seconds time mark in any event.
For smashing and setting a new World Record, Amusan was awarded prize money of USD 100,000 after achieving what no woman has been able to do before.
And speaking to the media after her victory in Oregon, Amusan expressed her excitement about clinching the top podium finish and setting a new World Record.
“It has been a journey and I thank God for keeping me healthy and I couldn’t be more thankful, I came out here with a win and a World Record.
Coming into the semifinals, I knew it was a competitive feeling so the goal was to execute and survive to the final and see the World Record. I’m like yes yes yes(laugh) but I had to keep my composure for the final and I think I handled that pretty well,” she said.
Also on Monday morning, fellow Nigerian compatriot, Ese Brume jumped her way to a Silver medal after leaping 7.02m in the Women’s Long Jump event on the final day of the World Athletics Champions in Oregon.
After nine days since the competition began, Nigeria waited until the tenth, which is the last day of the competition, to win her only two medals at the 2022 World Athletics Champions.
