Tokyo 2020 Olympics is still very much in the air with lots of medals given out already to many athletes from different sports and Nigerian athletes are not left out of the equation.
Nigeria’s Tobi Amusan lost out slightly on being on the podium after finishing a close fourth in the women’s 100m hurdles event. Despite finishing 4th, she has received praises from many Nigerians and the Minister for Youth and Sports Development, Mr. Sunday Dare.
“Tobi Amusan still remains one of Nigeria’s greatest competitors in athletics. She gave a good account of herself. We celebrate her exploits,” the minister told Sports247.
“The important thing to note is that many of our top athletes made it and are still making it to the finals in many events particularly here at the Olympics; a competition of huge magnitude where winners are separated in milliseconds. This in itself is an achievement and proof that we are in the committee of the best in respect to many sports in the world,” he added.
Nigeria picked up two medals, a bronze from Ese Brume in the women’s long jump event and silver from Blessing Oborududu in women’s 68kg freestyle wrestling, Nigeria’s first-ever medal from wrestling in the Olympics.
“This is a new and young generation that will be world beaters anyhow. We still hold hopes for medals in the remaining events we are taking part in,” Mr. Sunday Dare said.
