The Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) has unveiled its list of athletes for the upcoming World Athletics Championships, but reigning women’s 100m hurdles champion Tobi Amusan’s absence is conspicuous due to her ongoing suspension.

The championships are scheduled to take place in Budapest, Hungary, from August 19 to 27.
The roster, comprising 26 athletes, features 11 male and 15 female participants who will represent Nigeria on the global stage. Notable among the entrants is Ese Brume, the silver medallist from last year’s championships.
Brume will compete in the long jump event alongside Ruth Usoro. The women’s list also includes Sade Olatoye (Hammer) and Chioma Onyekwere (Discus), who are expected to make significant contributions.
In the men’s category, athletes for the 100m and 4x100m relay races include national champion Usheoritshe Itshekiri, Favour Ashe, Seye Ogunlewe, Alaba Akintola, Fakorede Adekalu, and Anunagba Karlington.
On the women’s side, Rosemary Chukwuma, Favour Ofili, Faith Okwose, Justina Eyakpobeyan, and Success Umukoro have been selected to compete in the 100m and 4x100m relay event.
It is worth recalling that Tobi Amusan, the reigning women’s 100m hurdles world champion, is not part of the roster. This is attributed to her ongoing provisional suspension imposed by the Athletics Integrity Unit.
The suspension stems from Amusan missing three drug tests during the current season, a situation that emerged just one month prior to the commencement of the World Athletics Championships. Her absence from the list underscores the stringent anti-doping regulations upheld in international athletics.
