Ministry of Youth and Sports’ director of federations, Elite Athletes Department (FEAD), Tayo Oreweme has heaped praises on the founder of TIG Gymnastics Club, Anthony Asuquo for developing talents.
Speaking during the 8th Tony International Gymnastics (TIG) Schools Championship in Abuja, Oreweme hailed Asuquo for identifying talents from the grassroots, thereby providing a strong base for future exploits.
Chrisland School finished first in the championship, while second place went to Doveland followed by Aduvie in third place, as Lords School and Centagon placed fourth and fifth position respectively.
Afterwards, Oreweme called on other coaches and talent hunters to emulate the good work of Asuquo, in order to take Nigerian sports to greater height.
Oreweme harped on the importance of discipline for athletes to achieve their dreams of becoming world champions in their chosen fields, adding that there would be no elite athletes if there no strong foundation.
She added: “If clubs like TIG can be found in 36 states of the federations, then you can be sure that 36 wonders will happen to our sports.
“Any sport that does not have good bedrock will not excel, if you do not have a good grassroots development and club like this, you cannot have a good set of elites athletes. “
