On the 31st of October 2023, the 12th Sustainability in the Extractive Industries (SITEI) conference was held at the Four Points Hotel in Ikoyi.
This annual workshop, organized by CSR-in-Action in collaboration with key industry stakeholders like the Nigeria Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (NEITI), the Ministry of Petroleum Resources, the Federal Ministry of Mines and Steel Development (FMMSD), the Ministry of Environment, Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), and more, is a critical platform for discussions in the extractive sector.
The central theme for this year’s SITEI Conference was “The SDGs and the Extractive Sector: Aligning Governance, Policies, and Practices.” It attracted a diverse group of attendees, all deeply interested in the extractive industry and its impact on sustainable development.
A noteworthy highlight of the conference was the presentation of the Community and Human Rights (CAHR 2023) Awards Africa, which recognizes individuals who have made significant contributions to their respective fields. One of the esteemed awardees was Mofoluwasho Monisola Liasu, who received the prestigious Apostle Hayford Allie Humanitarian Award.
Mofoluwasho Liasu, a lawyer and the founder of the Super Parents Foundation, was recognized for her extraordinary work in supporting parents of children living with physical challenges. The Super Parents Foundation takes a holistic approach to assist these families, providing support for their mental, physical, and various other needs.
Mofoluwasho’s journey into this vital work began with her own introspection as a child. When asked about her talents at school, she recalls being unsure. However, her mother emphasized her innate qualities of generosity and kindness as her unique talents. Over time, these values transformed into a passionate mission to aid humanity, particularly vulnerable children and individuals.
“While growing up, kids in my school were always asked what their talent was and because I was timid, I didn’t fit into any category. I went home and asked my mother what my talent was so I could give feedback at school. The only thing she told me was generosity and kindness. One would wonder if generosity and kindness are a talent. She kept telling me this and somehow, it has paved the way for me.
In helping humanity, I am also helping myself. Not materially, but I have been able to self-develop. It has helped me a lot. Also, I find fulfillment in helping people especially vulnerable children and persons. I guess that is my talent.” Mofoluwa told Sports 247 in an interview.
The Super Parents Foundation, established six years ago, has made a significant impact in Lagos State and beyond. Their active presence on social media and support groups has created a platform where individuals can share their stories and bolster each other. The foundation even reaches out to families in distant regions, extending its services to northern states, with branches spanning the nation.
Looking ahead, Mofoluwasho aspires to continue expanding its reach, reaching even the most remote communities. To achieve this, she hopes to secure more sponsors and collaborate with additional NGOs and companies.
As a role model for many young individuals, Mofoluwasho offers words of encouragement, emphasizing the importance of acting for the right reasons. She believes that when one’s actions are driven by genuine intentions, it benefits not only others but also leads to personal growth. The key, she emphasizes, is to do it for the right reasons, ensuring that your actions contribute to a more compassionate and prosperous society.
