Senior Special Assistant to Governor Udom Emmanuel on Sports and Chairman, Akwa United, Elder Paul Bassey has declared that the “AITEO Cup is coming back home.”
Akwa United edged city rivals, Dakkada in the finals today by 2 goals to 2 with goals from David Onovo and Matib Franklin enough to seal the team’s 13th Akwa Ibom State FA Cup title despite Edidiong Ezekiel’s consolatory goal.
Giving his congratulatory message on behalf of the state’s commissioner for sports, Elder Paul Bassey emphasized that the level of football witnessed was the very best and should remain so at the national stage.
“The victory could have gone either way, there was so much rivalry and tension, I hope and pray that this would be translated to the national stage.”
On the state and football fans celebrating a trophy at the end of the season despite Akwa United losing the chance to defend their league title this season, the highly rated sports administrator said the “AITEO cup is coming home.”
“We have won the AITEO Cup before, it is high time we win it again and I am very confident with God on our side and the performance shown today, the league title might have eluded us but the AITEO Cup is still up grabs.”
“I want to believe and I repeat with what I saw here to today, the AITEO Cup will come back.” He concluded.
Akwa United had first won the AITEO Cup in 2015 and won it again in 2017. The Promise Keepers will be hoping to another Cup title to their cabinet after they added the league title to their cabinet for the first time in their history last season.
